NIST Proposes to Withdraw SP 800-102, Recommendation for Digitial Signature Timeliness
April 10, 2025

In November 2024, NIST's Crypto Publication Review Board initiated a review of NIST Special Publication 800-102, Recommendation for Digital Signature Timeliness. NIST subsequently received and posted public comments.

NIST proposes to withdraw SP 800-102.

SP 800-102 discusses the use of timestamps to establish the time when a digital signature was generated. Outside standards bodies have developed more relevant and comprehensive guidance in the latest revisions of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) X9.95 (Trusted Time Stamp Management and Security) and ISO/IEC 18014 (Time-stamping Services).

Submit comments on this decision by May 12, 2025 to cryptopubreviewboard@nist.gov with "Comments on SP 800-102 Decision Proposal" in the subject line. Comments received in response to this request will be posted on the Crypto Publication Review Project site after the due date. Submitters’ names and affiliations (when provided) will be included, while contact information will be removed. See the project site for additional information about the review process.
