On January 2, 1997, a Federal Register notice was published by NIST announcing the beginning of a process to develop the Advanced Encryption Standard. As the first step in this process, draft minimum acceptability requirements and draft criteria to evaluate candidate algorithms were published for comment. Also announced for comment were draft submission requirements. (See 1/2/97 Federal Register Notice and news release.) On April 15, 1997, an open, public workshop will be held on the draft minimum acceptability requirements, evaluation criteria and submission requirements.

The workshop will be open to the public.
