Public Key Infrastructure
- A certificate is a secure electronic identity conforming to the X.509 standard. Certificates typically contain a user's name and public key. A trusted entity also known as a Certificate Authority (CA) authorizes certificates by signing the contents electronically.
- Its like a paper signature, except that it is electronic. Its impossible to forge, and more secure than a paper signature. Once a file has been digitally signed, any changes made to the file will result in an error. It provides a guarantee to a recipient that the signed file came from the person who sent it, and that it has not been altered.
