This bulletin summarizes the information presented in NISTIR 7628, Guidelines for Smart Grid Cyber Security. The guidelines were developed as a consensus document by the Cyber Security Working Group (CSWG) of the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP), a public-private partnership formed by NIST in 2009. NISTIR 7628 is a three volume report that presents an analytical framework for developing cyber security strategies for the Smart Grid, a planned advanced electric power grid for the 21st century. The publication helps organizations to develop effective cyber security strategies that can be tailored to their own particular characteristics, risks, and vulnerabilities related to the Smart Grid. The bulletin identifies the information presented in the three volume report, summarizes the risks to the Smart Grid, and explains the importance of developing cyber security strategies for the Smart Grid. Ongoing NIST activities to support the development of the needed cyber security strategies are also summarized. References are provided to additional sources of information on the Smart Grid program.
