• November 17 -- NIST announces Draft FIPS 140-2, Security Requirements for Cryptographic Modules.  The formal public comment period is now closed (updated 3/15/2000). PLEASE NOTE --- this draft is now a finalized FIPS publication, and can be found on CSRC FIPS Publications page.

• November 17 -- November ITL Bulletin published on acquiring and deploying intrusion detection systems.

• November 5 -- NIST announces the approval by the Secretary of Commerce of Federal Information Processing Standard 46-3, Data Encryption Standard (DES).   This revision to the standard specifies the use of Triple DES, as described in ANSI X9.52.  (Comments were sought on draft FIPS 46-3 earlier in 1999.)

• November 4 -- 2000 National Information Systems Security (NISS) Conference Call for Papers

• November 1 -- NIST announces workshop scheduled for February 10-11, 2000 to examine public key management techniques as specified in various voluntary industry consensus standards.

September

• On September 30 -- NIST Director Raymond G. Kammer testified before Congress on H.R. 2413 (.PDF file - 51KB) the Computer Security Enhancement Act of 1999.

• September 15 -- Request for Comments on the Five AES Finalist Algorithms.  Comments are due May 15, 2000.

August

• August 19 --  Elliptic Curves now available on the Encryption homepage.

• August 9 -- NIST announces that the five finalists for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) development effort are MARS, RC6^TM, Rijndael, Serpent, and Twofish.  More information on the AES, including NIST's Round 1 Report, is available on the AES Home Page

• July 7 -- Public comments sought on encryption key recovery work of the Technical Advisory Committee to Develop a Federal Information Processing Standard for the Federal Key Management Infrastructure.  Click here for details of request for comments,comments received ( Steve Covey, Joseph P.
