Small Business Corner (SBC)

Small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are the backbone of the US economy. It is estimated that there are nearly 30 million SMBs—representing over 95% of all businesses—of 500 employees or less nationwide. These SMBs often rely on information technology (IT) for storing, processing, and transmitting information that is critical to running their businesses. The protection of that information from unauthorized disclosure, modification, or deletion (information security) is essential to both business continuity and the protection of customer privacy.

Unlike large corporations, SMBs cannot always justify an extensive security program or even full-time staff devoted to information security. Nevertheless, SMBs are confronted with serious security challenges and must address the challenges based on identified risks. Faced with limited resources and budgets, SMBs need information security solutions as well as training that is practical, enabling them to cost-effectively address their information security risks.

To address these needs, NIST, the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), and other parties have partnered to provide cybersecurity training for SMBs.
