NIST received 64 entries for the SHA-3 competition; among these, 51 First Round Candidates were announced on Dec. 9, 2008 for meeting the minimum submission requirements, and Round One of the competition started.
NIST held the First SHA-3 Candidate Conference at KU Leuven, Belgium on Feb. 25-28, 2009. Submitters of the First Round Candidates were invited to present their algorithms, and NIST discussed the process and criteria for selecting the second round candidates for further studies by summer of 2009.
NIST announced 14 Second Round Candidates on July 24, 2009, and completed the first round of the SHA-3 Competition. A status report on the first round of the competition is available here.
